Social Security is not calculated on the real salary, but on an official bracketed base (Special Regime for Domestic Workers 2026).

Includes the automatic 20% reduction on common contingencies and the 80% bonification on unemployment and FOGASA.

Indicative information based on the 2026 SMI and the Special Regime for Domestic Workers. Not legal or tax advice.

How it’s calculated

Under the Special Regime for Domestic Workers, Social Security contributions are applied on top of the gross salary. The family (employer) pays one part and the worker pays a smaller part. That is why the real cost for the family is higher than the gross salary, and the net the worker receives is slightly lower.

1

Gross salary is the base

It’s the agreed hourly pay times the hours. The 2026 legal minimum is €9.55/h for the by-the-hour external regime (already including prorated bonus payments and holidays).

2

The family pays its Social Security share

The contribution isn’t calculated on the real salary but on an official bracketed base. The employer contribution (common and professional contingencies, unemployment, FOGASA and MEI) is applied to that base; with household bonifications, the effective rate is around 22%.

3

The worker contributes their share

The worker’s contribution (common contingencies, unemployment and MEI) is deducted, an effective rate of just over 6%. That’s the gap between gross and net.

Frequently asked questions

Where do these figures come from?

From the 2026 SMI (Real Decreto 126/2026) and the contribution Order PJC/297/2026, which govern the Special Regime for Domestic Workers. We cross-checked the calculation against the official Social Security calculator.

Why isn’t Social Security proportional to the salary?

Because in domestic employment the contribution is calculated on an official bracketed base, not on the real salary. Each monthly-pay range maps to a fixed base; only above about €1,424/month does the base equal the real salary. So raising pay within the same bracket doesn’t change the contribution until it jumps to the next one.

What are the automatic bonifications?

They are reductions the State applies to the employer contribution: 20% on common contingencies and 80% on unemployment and FOGASA. They apply automatically to most households up to date with Social Security and the tax authority. You can switch them off to see the full rates.

Why is the real cost higher than the hourly pay?

Because the Social Security contribution the family pays as an employer is added on top of the gross salary. The worker never sees that part, but it is part of the total cost of employing them legally.

Does this include income tax (IRPF)?

No. Domestic employment usually has no IRPF withholding unless expressly agreed, so the calculator shows gross, the Social Security contribution and the resulting net, with no tax withholding. Every personal situation differs; check with a professional for your case.

Is this legal advice?

No. It’s a guidance tool to give you a sense of the numbers. For your specific case, check with Social Security or an advisor.
